Antique boat show recalls earlier era
Community

Victoria Bowers’ 1952 Elgin, a 14-foot, wooden-hulled ski boat she bought in 2002 and spent two years restoring, is one of the many rare sights you’ll see this month at the 11th Antique & Classical Boat Show at Queen’s Landing. With its deep brown silhouette and polished cockpit adorned with custom captain’s pillows, the Lil’ Susie is typical of the vessels that recall an earlier, more graceful era of boating.

All's Fair
Carnival time in Iredell County is a down-home treat
Community

For six days in early September, the Iredell County Fairgrounds in Troutman is transformed into a glittering carnival midway. The air vibrates with the shrieks of teenagers as they fly through the air on thrill rides, and the squeals of joyful children radiate from mini race cars. Along the midway, carnival workers beckon passersby to “step right up” and try to win one of the giant stuffed animals dangling from the booth.

Amy Broome feels at home on stage
Restaurants & Nightlife

Like many lifelong music fans, Amy Broome was inspired by a song, but unlike most of us, she did something about it. After hearing Melissa Etheridge’s signature hit song, “Come to My Window,” she picked up a guitar, knowing she could make others feel the same way.

Get your Tex-Mex fix at Mazatlan Mexican Restaurant
Restaurants & Nightlife

The tasty fare at Mazatlan Mexican Restaurant in Denver is a real find for anyone looking for the spicy flavors of good Tex-Mex cooking.

Manager Roy Martinez says the Denver location has been open for six years, and the restaurant is one of several locations in the region (including Lincolnton, Thomasville, Albemarle and Troy). The name Mazatlan is the same as the famous resort city on the Gold Coast of western Mexico that’s a popular tourist destination. You can find it on the large map of Mexico that adorns one wall of the eatery.

Backyard Birdies
Golf’s greatest names swing through western N.C.
Recreation & Events

PGA Tour legend Curtis Strange stepped onto the first tee box at the 2007 Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn. His introduction was met with thunderous applause, partly due to his ties to Wake Forest University, and partly because one of his playing partners, Fred Funk, stood behind him and urged the crowd to cheer loudly for their very own “homegrown Carolina boy.”

Darin Mock had his sixth birthday party at a diner last month. But don’t envision a bunch of 6-year-olds eating apple pie at a cheap restaurant - Darin had his birthday party at the Hot Rod Garage, which happens to be located at his house in Huntersville.

The Flower Factory
Metrolina Greenhouses has the art of growing plants down to a science
Homefronts Special Section

It’s the time of year to pull out your haggard impatiens and replace them with colorful pansies. It’s easy enough to do - you simply buy a flat of flowers, go home and dig. But did you ever wonder where those uniform blossoms of orange, purple and yellow came from?

The Big Picture
The latest in television technology
Homefronts Special Section

Theater audiences have been on the decline during the last decade or so, and the trend is expected to continue.

With today’s jumbo-sized TV screens and high-quality images, it’s easy to see why people aren’t heading to the cinema. It’s never been easier to enjoy a theater-like experience from the comfort of home, without the overpriced snacks, disruptive kids and inconsiderate people chatting on cell phones.

Fancy Fronts
Garage doors add elegance by taking inspiration from the past
Homefronts Special Section

When Mike Sherman was putting the final custom design touches on his 10,000-square-foot waterfront home at The Point in 2005, he put a lot of thought into the look of the garage doors. While some folks think of a garage door as a place to hang a basketball goal or a way to hide years of accumulated clutter, others see them as a key element of the home that should fit in with its architectural style and beauty.

Hot Stuff
Appliances are heating up in the kitchen
Homefronts Special Section

Thirty years ago, figuring out which appliance to buy for your kitchen was fairly simple stuff: do you want that new fridge in avocado green or burnt gold? Are you willing – or hip – enough to shell out the money for a new microwave? These days, though, kitchens have evolved from supporting roles into stars all their own. As a result, they require accoutrements that live up to their newfound status. You might spend weeks trying to decide if an induction cook-top is right for you, or if you need two dishwashers instead of just the one. Whatever your needs are, you can be sure that there’s an appliance out there that can meet it. All you have to do is find it.

Ready, Set, Organize
Professional organizers can help put your house in order
Homefronts Special Section

With the popularity of shows like “Clean Sweep” on TLC, it’s no surprise that eliminating clutter and organizing homes is a popular trend among homeowners. A July 2007 survey by the Riedel Marketing Group for the International Housewares Association found that more than half of the participants had completed home organizing projects in the previous six months and had bought home organization products such as plastic storage boxes, closet storage or organizers and craft storage products.

On a recent trip, I flew out of Charlotte/Douglas airport and headed north for a week of cool, Yankee weather. As the plane climbed into the sky, I was treated to a stunning view of Lake Norman, its spidery arms spreading out in all directions, with Interstate 77 snaking through the middle. Looking out the ground eased by, and I was struck by the magnitude and vitality of the scene below me.
